Flowers for Valentine’s Day: Yay or Nay?

Custom Valentine’s arrangement from Floral de Lights

As I mentioned in other posts, I just can’t believe it’s almost Valentine’s Day already!  I swear, the older I get, the faster time flies.  I wish it would just slow down a bit, you know?

I was a late-bloomer, never really had an interest in dating when I was in school, I had other things, better things to do.  Like reading, playing the piano, drawing, painting, watching Star Trek- yep, I was a nerd (still am).  But, being an artist, I’ve always been into doing anything creative.  So, I really enjoyed my work as a floral designer.  Even when I no longer worked as a floral designer professionally, I helped out at flower shops.  My friend, Haley, had a  shop for a while, then my friend Sandi opened one up and I helped her until she died.

For florists who are required to work on busy days, it can be stressful.  But, for people like me who just volunteered time for “fun,” it was a joy!  Valentine’s Day was one of those days where we could get REALLY creative.  Sure, we had the people who ordered traditional things, such as red roses, stuffed animals, etc.  But then, we had people who would want something different, something with a real “wow” factor.  (Pssst… If you’re sending flowers for Valentine’s Day, try telling the florist to use his or her best judgment and just be creative- chances are, you’ll get something REALLY fabulous, and you’ll get more than what you paid for! 😉 )

To this day, I loathe red roses.  Yes, they are absolutely beautiful, stunning.  But, when you see thousands and thousands of them, you get tired of them.  It got to be that way with gerber daisies, too.  They’re cute, bright, and fun, but I’ve seen way too many of them…lol!  Want to impress me with flowers?  Peonies, poppies, lilacs, lilies of the valley, Casablanca lilies, cymbidium orchids, gardenias, birds of paradise, and no damn baby’s breath!  The ONLY time I’ve seen baby’s breath look modern and elegant was when it was used by itself– and it was simple yet stunning.

Want to impress me with a stuffed animal?  Sorry, you can’t…lol.  Also on the “no” list are pajamas or anything “As Seen on TV.”  Want to really impress me?  Food.  Yes, I’ll take those cliché chocolates!  Cake?  Yes, please!  I’ll also take a nice dinner where I can “cheat” and eat carbs, simple carbs that are very, very bad for me!

But, when it comes down to it, if someone sends me pajamas or a red rose, guess what?  I’ll love it.  I don’t care what it is, the idea that someone thought enough of me to do something like that is enough to make the day perfect.   🙂
