Move over Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer, there’s a new guy in town!
Although sun protection is important year-round, with summer being here, we’re outdoors a lot more, and need to take extra care. With sunscreen being one of my top fave anti-aging products, I’m always on the lookout for high-quality new products.
I was SO excited to get the Coola Daydream Mineral Primer in the mail- not only is Coola one of my favorite sun protection brands, but they have some great multi-tasking products. When I first heard about Coola Daydream and checked out the ingredients, it reminded me of my fave Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer (see this post), so I really wanted to do a comparison. (Make sure to check out the video at the bottom to see side by side “swatches.”)
I love you Hourglass, and will always love you, but Coola has you beat! In some ways, the two primers perform equally. Like the Hourglass, Coola Daydream Mineral Primer is a white, light feeling cream, so light that it’s more like a lotion. It applies and spreads VERY easily, doesn’t feel or look greasy, and leaves skin perfectly smooth. Although silicones are present, one of the things I like about both of these primers is they doesn’t feel overly “siliconey,” but still provide a very smooth surface.

Additionally, both the Coola and Hourglass primers are housed in glass bottles with a pump. I really like the high quality look and feel of the packaging. However, this could also be a negative if you’re wanting to travel with the product, as the glass could break. This should not be a deterrent, though, as you can easily transfer a small amount to a plastic container for travel, if need be.
There are some areas where Coola Daydream far outweighs Hourglass. When it comes to SPF, Coola is king with a rating of 30, which is the standard set by the American Academy of Dermatology. Hourglass has an SPF of about 15, which is quite low, and I don’t even think it’s advertised as having such anymore.
Also, due to the nature of the ingredients, mineral primers can tend to separate, so you often need to shake them. While I usually shake all my liquid products, I held off just to see how long I could go with Coola. I’ve been using Coola Daydream for a week now, and I only shook it the first time I used it, and haven’t had to since. With Hourglass, I need to shake it daily.
The Coola Daydream formula is quite luxurious. In addition to the zinc oxide and titanium dioxide sunscreens, it also contains the brand’s signature Plant Protection, which consists of a “bouquet of honeysuckle, white lily and iris stem cells.” I love the added benefits! If you’re sensitive to fragrance, there is no need to worry with the botanicals, as there is no discernible fragrance with Coola Daydream.
I have oily/combination skin, and I didn’t even need to use a moisturizer, so Coola Daydream is a true multi-tasker (and money-saver!)- three steps in one- moisturizer, sunscreen, and primer! My makeup lasted all day, my pores stayed clear, and my skin was protected.
So, what’s the bottom line? If Coola Daydream and Hourglass Veil were to go at it in the ring, Coola would be the clear winner. Coola Daydream has a higher SPF, contains added botanicals to help the skin, and doesn’t separate as much. To top it off, Coola Daydream is $42 for one ounce, while Hourglass is $52 for one ounce.
