Hey everyone, hope your week has been spectacular!
Have you noticed that essential oils are a “thing” lately? Well, I’ve got news for ya- they’ve ALWAYS been a “thing.” Yep. Natural lifestyle lovers have been using them for, well, since forever.
One of the most reputable brands of essential oils and natural products, Plant Therapy, was very generous and sent me their Helichrysum Italicum essential oil and hydrosol. I’m super-duper excited to tell you about how awesome they are!
First off, the reason I have a particular interest in Helichrysum Italicum is because of the L’Occitane products I used to use. I really liked the formulation of their Immortelle line, but most of the products were too “heavy” for my oily/combination skin. They weren’t really something I could use for the day time.
The Immortelle products were centered on Helichrysum Italicum, or what is commonly known as Immortal Flower. This name comes from the plant’s ability to retain its bright color, even after it “dies.” It really doesn’t seem to “age.”
While I haven’t been able to locate any scientific research from peer-reviewed journals, Helichrysum Italicum has long been coveted for its anti-aging benefits. I really liked the glow I had from the L’Occitane products I was using, so I set out to find more details.
I found a plethora of proven information about this plant, including the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties it possesses. This seems to be the reason for the anti-aging reputation, and a valid one at that.
According to Dr. Eric Zielinski, the Journal of Ethnopharmacology has touted the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits, with Helichrysum Italicum being one of seventeen essential oils that has highly active antioxidant activity even at lower concentrations (Zielinski, 2017). A-ha! So this is why it’s so effective as an anti-aging powerhouse!
Anyway, as I mentioned, I loved the effects I got from the L’Occitane Immortelle products, but wanted something a bit lighter. So, I figured I’d go straight to the source- Helichrysum Italicum itself! One of many advantages of ordering from Plant Therapy is that they also carry the hydrosol, which is the by-product of the steam distillation process of making the essential oil.
I’ll start with the hydrosol, since the way I’m using it is straightforward- it comes with a cap where you can pour it out, and a spray cap. I use the spray cap, and stashed this wonder-water in the fridge. I started using it in a way similar to Korean skincare routines, and spray it on my face as an essence immediately after toning.
This stuff smells so comforting, it’s like walking into a craft store, it has a light, natural dried floral smell. It’s relaxing, and helps calm me, especially after a long, stressful day. I’ve also found it useful after irritating products, such as peels, exfoliants, or even bentonite masks. When my skin is reddened following these products, I spray the hydrosol on, and it calms the redness very quickly.
As for the essential oil, I’ve been adding it to my skincare products. I’ve added it to my antioxidant serum, hyaluronic acid serum, night cream, and even my foundation! Keep in mind, essential oils are VERY strong and concentrated, so you don’t need much. I was intending to add 1-2 drops to my antioxidant serum, but got distracted (I thought I saw a bug on the wall…lol) and ended up adding 4 drops. Oops! But, it smells really, really, REALLY good!
I’ve had no irritation from stepping up the performance of my skincare products by adding the Helichrysum Italicum essential oil. My skin is loving the addition of both the oil and hydrosol to my routine. I was just asked for my I.D. to buy wine, and I intend to keep getting asked for as long as possible!
The fabulous folks at Plant Therapy have a ton of useful, high-quality products, in addition to the Helichrysum Italicum oil and hydrosol. The site is user-friendly, very helpful, and they have a lot of great details about each product. They’re also reasonably priced, ship quickly, and I loved getting the cheerful, colorful package, it really brightened my day! Head on over to PlantTherapy.com, you won’t regret it!
