I admit it, I’m a skincare snob. Sorry, not sorry, but when I turned 30, I started getting serious about what I put into my body, and onto my skin. Being a long-time fan of Perricone MD skincare products, I was ecstatic to get the opportunity to review their new Pre:Empt Series Skin Perfecting Serum!
The Perricone MD Pre:Empt Series is formulated with Nrf2 Antioxidant Support Complex to preempt and correct the first visible signs of aging. The series contains four products that help fight free radicals that can cause fine lines, dark circles, and more noticeable pores.
So, what is Nrf2? According to Dr. Perricone, years of scientific research led to an unprecedented, proprietary antioxidant formula. This complex, derived from turmeric, olive leaf, green tea, and cress sprouts, helps activate antioxidant pathways to aid in improving the skin’s own natural ability to combat oxidative stress and environmental aggravators (Perricone, 2016).
As we age, our bodies are faced with more free radicals than can be handled, which results in oxidative stress and damage. This damage may not even be felt or seen until it’s too late. While we can’t stop the free radical production entirely, that doesn’t mean our bodies have to be defenseless (Perricone, 2016).

Nrf2 is a vital component to our body’s own antioxidant response, therefore being one of the best solutions for counteracting free radicals. Once activated, cells are enabled to protect themselves by producing a wide range of antioxidant enzymes, neutralizing free radicals at the rate of one million per second! What it comes down to is that this complex is incredibly effective in combating signs of aging (Perricone, 2016).
Needless to say, I was thrilled when my package arrived from the fine folks at Perricone MD! I received the Pre:Empt Skin Perfecting Serum- I still have some of my Perricone MD Face Finishing Moisturizer left, so I felt like this would work perfectly with it, and I was right!
Generally, your serum is the hardest-working step of your skincare routine, and this is no exception. The Perricone MD Pre:Empt Skin Perfecting Serum contains the highest concentration of Nrf2 Antioxidant Support Complex. This oil-free, silky formula not only helps protect against premature aging, but also primes the skin for other skincare products and makeup application (Perricone, 2016).
Like all the other Perricone MD products, the packaging of the Pre:Empt Skin Perfecting Serum is sleek and classy looking. The serum is housed in a dark brown glass bottle with a dropper. The label is off-white, with an easy-to-read font, making product identification a breeze.
Now, for the question I know many of you have- what does it smell like? I know, I know, I know, some of the Cold Plasma products have a natural odor that many people find unpleasant. Personally, as long as it dissipates quickly and the product works, I don’t care what it smells like. But, drumroll please…
The Perricone MD Pre:Empt Skin Perfecting Serum has a very natural, pleasant scent. It’s kind of like an herbal fragrance, those who are really sensitive may think it leans a bit toward a medicinal odor, but just barely. I find the smell to be both relaxing and energizing- does that even make sense…? I look forward to applying this in the mornings as it does tend to wake me up a bit. But, in the evenings, it tends to relax me, almost the way lavender does. Strange, huh?
Regarding application, the Perricone MD Pre:Empt Skin Perfecting Serum is very concentrated, and a little goes a long way. One to two drops will easily cover my whole face, and it takes just a tiny bit more to cover my neck. The oil-free formula is easy to apply, is readily absorbed, and doesn’t make me greasy. Another plus is that unlike so many other serums, it doesn’t get sticky- my skin just feels really smooth, and my moisturizer seems to absorb more easily, too.
The only negative I could find with the Perricone MD Pre:Empt Skin Perfecting Serum is the dropper bottle. In order to preserve stability and prevent degradation, products with antioxidants should be packaged in such a way as to minimize exposure to light and air (Kaur, Kapila & Agrawal, 2007). It’s a shame to spend money on a high-end product with such a great formulation, when it will be rendered less effective, or even ineffective.
While the bottle is dark brown and prevents light exposure, repeatedly taking the dropper out and putting back in introduces air to the product, as well as allows light exposure. I feel like this fantastic serum could have been packaged in a pump-style bottle, which would have eliminated this problem.
However, the Perricone MD Pre:Empt Skin Perfecting Serum is such a superb formula that the dropper packaging should in no way be a deterrent in purchasing. The smooth, silky, easy-to-use serum is well worth trying out. You can easily transfer it into a dark-colored pump or bottle with a spout. If you don’t do this, just make sure to minimize the time you have the bottle open, take care not to touch the dropper to your skin, and quickly close it up tightly when done.
Overall, I’m very impressed with Perricone MD Pre:Empt Skin Perfecting Serum. It’s perfect for almost any skin type, and not only is it a great treatment in its own right, but it enhances your other products, too. If you’re in need of a superb, hard-working serum, you should try this out ASAP!
