If you’ve been paying any attention at all to my anti-aging posts, you know that sun protection is of the utmost importance. Even with the most cutting-edge anti-aging procedures and products, if you fail to protect your skin from the sun, you can kiss any positive results “goodbye.”
Classic suncare products contain ingredients such as octinoxate and avobenzone, which absorb ultraviolet light. In the past, these chemicals have caused irritation in people with sensitive skin. There were physical (mineral) sunblocks made with zinc and titanium, but those were opaque, and therefore, usually only used by lifeguards and sportsmen. In modern times, though, technology has allowed physical sunblocks to made with nano-sized particles of zinc and titanium, which makes them almost clear.
However, Bionova has brought forth the next generation in sun protection through pioneering the use of UV chromophores in skincare products. What are UV chromophores? Simply put, these particles act in a way similar to classic sunscreen, they absorb UV rays rather than reflect them.
The doctors at Bionova believe the only real protection from the sun is to avoid it; and if you must be in the sun, wear a wide-brimmed hat and loose fitting clothing over your skin. The greatest danger of the sun is not just aging, but cancer. The outer layer of skin is burned off, and there is no longer protection. Furthermore, Bionova says that while traditional mineral sunblocks may prevent sunburn, they do not prevent cancer (Bionova, 2015).
According to Bionova, mineral sunblocks should not be used unless they are absolutely necessary. While they acknowledge the practicality of requiring this type of SPF when outdoors, it should be washed off immediately upon returning indoors. These ingredients don’t just block UV light, they also block your skin from absorbing Vitamin D, which is a necessary element in preventing many diseases (Bionova, 2015).
Finally, traditional SPF ingredients not only have the ability to clog pores and cause acne breakouts, but they can interfere with the skin’s metabolism, leading to premature aging such as dark spots. You can read more about this research here (Bionova, 2015). So, what products contain UV chromophores?
Bionova’s N1-Custom and Tennis product lines contain UV chromophores. Their new BN Science line, available exclusively at Dermstore.com, also contains UV chromophores. The Tennis line is NOT just for tennis players! The catchy name encompasses all the environmental factors a tennis player may face, such as free radicals, oxidative stress, ozone, wind, harsh weather conditions, and the sun. They even have products for “stringer’s finger,” abrasions, etc. (Bionova, 2010). So, this line is perfect for anyone who spends time outdoors or in the sun!
Bionova’s Sun & Wind Protection creams use a specially developed nanocomplex containing UV chromophores and UV protectants to enhance the skin’s resilience against harmful sun radiation. Skin Barrier System and Intermediate Density Lipoprotein nanocomplexes protect against wind and harsh weather conditions. The skin is nourished with a nanocomplex of essential vitamins, enzymes, bioactive proteins, and glycolipids, which help maintain a high level of skin cell metabolism (Bionova, 2010).
Furthermore, Bionova‘s Sun & Wind Protection creams reduce skin irritation and exert anti-bacterial effects with a nanocomplex consisting of multiple bacteriostatic and keratolitic agents. Finally, natural bioflavonoids and anti-free radical scavengers protect against sun and ozone damage along with oxidative stress and free radicals (Bionova, 2010).
So, what do you need to do? Try to avoid the sun altogether between 11am and 3pm. When you are in the sun, make sure to keep your skin covered and wear a wide-brimmed hat. If you must be in the sun, then of course, sun protection is necessary. If you use a traditional SPF, make sure it’s broad spectrum and thoroughly wash it off when you return indoors.
I have been using Bionova‘s BN Science Anti-Stress Care for Oily Skin with UV Chromophores. I have had fantastic results (see this post). I have also recently started using the N1-Custom Facial Aging and Wrinkle Treatment with UV chromophores and ozone protection. My skin is reacting very well, and never feels suffocated. I will be posting my results from the N1-Custom very soon, so keep checking back!
The Bionova Tennis (Sport) and N1-Custom lines are available from Bionova, and the BN Science line is available at Dermstore.com.

Oh I didn’t know that could harm my skin. I use [edited] mineral foundation and I thought it would help but I keep breaking out. I wonder if that’s why I break out is because its bad?
Hi LuLuvsMe! I’m so sorry you’ve been breaking out! It’s important to consider that what works for some people may not work for others. If you suspect any products may be causing a problem, you may want to stop using it temporarily to see if the problem is resolved. That’s why I like Bionova- all of their ingredients are natural to the human body. If the problem still persists, make sure to see your esthetician or dermatologist. Thank you for your support! 🙂
