When I hit 30, I started taking anti-aging skincare VERY seriously. I have done a plethora of research on skincare ingredients that actually work; and glycolic acid is one my top picks (read more here). Additionally, there are several brands that I am partial to because they’re actually backed by legitimate science- Exuviance is one of those brands (read more here).
When I got the opportunity to test and review Exuviance Glycolic Expert Moisturizer, I was thrilled because it combines two of my faves- glycolic acid as an ingredient, with the trusted brand Exuviance. Exuviance is one of those rare brands that I have never been disappointed with, and I’ve always had great results with glycolic acid.
Glycolic acid, rated as a “Best” ingredient by Beautypedia, is a leave-on alpha hydroxy acid exfoliant. It helps restore and maintain a youthful appearance by treating photodamaged skin as well as normalizing skin texture and thickness (Begoun, 2016).
Something I really appreciate about glycolic acid is that it’s one of the most well-studied of the alpha hydroxy acids. There is a wealth of research available that substantiates the effectiveness of the topical application of glycolic acid (Begoun, 2016).
Now, about that research… the Exuviance skincare line was developed by Drs. Van Scott and Yu, who are renowned world-wide in the field of cosmetic dermatology. They are the very doctors who created, and originally patented, the first “lunchtime” glycolic peel! What better product could you ask for…?
Exuviance Glycolic Expert Moisturizer contains an impressive 10% glycolic acid, and it’s second only to water on the ingredient list. Additionally, it contains some great ingredients that help soothe and moisturize the skin, such as Vitamin E, chamomile, and aloe.
There are a few important things to consider if you’re new to glycolic acid, as the ingredient can be somewhat irritating to sensitive skin. But, this doesn’t mean you have to avoid it! If you’re new to running, you don’t start off running a marathon, you start off at a very short distance until your body gets used to it, right?
This same logic applies to your skin, for example, prior to getting a professional glycolic peel, many doctors recommend using glycolic products for a period of time first. Make sense?
So, you should first start off doing a patch test to see how the ingredient reacts with your skin. Although my skin is extremely sensitive from using tretinoin, I have zero problems with glycolic acid in my skincare products. I was a bit more sensitive in my last professional strength peel, but my regular products give me no trouble at all. This is because my skin is accustomed to the ingredient.
Glycolic acid is most effective in leave-on products. However, it’s often included in cleansers just to enhance the anti-aging effects of other products as well as the cleanser itself. So, if you’re sensitive or experience any irritation, start off by using a cleanser. Since cleanser is washed off, you’ll be less likely to experience irritation, and your skin can become better acclimated to the glycolic acid. You can then gradually add in other glycolic products as your skin adjusts.
Finally, make sure you’re using a high-quality product from a trusted brand, as your skin will be less likely to get irritated. With Exuviance Glycolic Expert Moisturizer, not only do you get 10% glycolic acid, but you also get the added benefit of soothing ingredients that make your skin feel pampered! So, if you’re curious about glycolic products, Exuviance is THE brand to get.
Exuviance Glycolic Expert Moisturizer is housed in a convenient and sanitary pump bottle. Since it’s opaque and enclosed, it doesn’t get exposed to light or air, so the ingredients remain effective. Although the formula is very moisturizing, it has a light texture that’s easy to spread, absorbs readily, and doesn’t get greasy. It has a fresh, barely discernible natural scent that dissipates quickly. This is so light, though, that it’s not really noticeable- so no worries if you’re sensitive to fragrance.
Although the packaging states that the Exuviance Glycolic Expert Moisturizer is for normal/combination skin, I’m oily/combination and this is perfect for me at night. Even if you’re really dry, you may not want to use this in the morning, as glycolic acid products cause heightened sensitivity to the sun. And this brings me to another point- make sure you always use sunscreen, even if you stop using glycolic products, you must use sunscreen for a week or so after in order to prevent sunburn or irritation.
Overall, if you’re looking for a fantastic anti-aging moisturizer that actually does what it’s supposed to do, you should definitely give Exuviance Glycolic Expert a shot. For more information check out Exuviance.com.
