Ugggghhhh… not ready for this colder weather! Not only do I miss summer time, but the cool, dry weather tends to wreak havoc on my skin.

If you’re like me, winter is a very busy time because of the holidays. I don’t always have time, or the money, considering how many gifts there are to buy, for procedures to keep my skin in tip-top condition. Sure, regular facials and exfoliation would be nice, but just not practical. It’s times like this that I welcome anything that will help me get a healthy glow at home.

When a PMD Personal Microderm tool arrived in the mail, it was like Christmas had come early! This device promises to blast away wrinkles, fine lines, dark spots, and blemishes for professional spa/dermatologist results at home. The PMD combines patented Spinning Disc Technology with perfectly calibrated vacuum suction. This helps smooth, brighten, and even out skin texture and tone, as well as reduces the appearance of pores, blemishes, fine lines, and wrinkles. Furthermore, skincare products absorb better, and makeup goes on smoother following treatment.

So, how does the PMD work? Just like with professional microdermabrasion, micro-abrasions take off the top layer of dull, dead skin, which stimulates collagen production and the natural healing process. Vacuum suction enhances this effect by bringing blood flow and nutrients to the skin’s surface.

The PMD comes with several discs of varying coarseness. You’re supposed to start out with the finest texture, then gradually move up to the coarsest as your skin adjusts. There are small discs for the face, and larger discs that can be used on the body.

In addition to the device itself, I also received the Daily Cell Regeneration System, which consists of the Advanced Soothing Cleanser, Neuro Neutralizing Toner, and Professional Recovery Moisturizer. These skincare products are designed to maximize recovery and enhance the skin rejuvenation process following PMD treatment.

Several weeks after evaluating PMD treatments and the regeneration system alone, I received the new Recovery Anti-Aging Collagen Infused Masks. These sheet masks are formulated to soothe, intensely hydrate, and minimize the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, and dark spots.

Using the PMD

The PMD device I received came with four colors of tips- white, green, blue and gray. This was a bit confusing because the colors described in the instruction manual and enclosed video are completely different, so I had to look them up on the website to see which ones were which. You’re supposed to start out with the white “training” disc, followed by gray, blue, and green.

pmd-7

I skipped the white disc, going straight for the gray. Also, you’re not supposed to do more than one or two passes on any given area of skin. I did three, sometimes four, with no issues. This doesn’t mean you should do this, I just did it for testing purposes. The only problem I had was getting used to the suction, and I ended up with a round, slightly abraded area, but it went away within a couple days.

After using the gray disc once, and the blue disc twice, (one treatment per week), there was a slightly noticeable change in the texture of my skin. Without the layer of dry, dead skin, my face felt smoother. I did, however, break out and get three pimples, which is to be expected. As layers of skin are shed and impurities get purged to the surface, this is normal. The difference is that these spots tend to go away a lot quicker than “normal” zits.

I also noticed my pores appeared less noticeable, and what few extractions I needed to do were a lot easier since the layer of dead skin was gone. My makeup also went on much more smoothly, and I needed less of it.

PMD Cell Regeneration System

Prior to using the PMD device, I cleansed and toned with the Regeneration skincare products, then afterward, I cleansed and toned again, and finished with the moisturizer. I’ll be honest, I’m not usually impressed with skincare products that are secondary to a device. Often, it seems like the formulas are just an “afterthought” and only serve to allow the brand to continue to make money even after customers have purchased a device. However, that was NOT the case with PMD!

Advanced Soothing Cleanser

I found that the PMD Cell Regeneration System products are actually very well-formulated. The Advanced Soothing Cleanser is specially formulated to soothe the skin and protect it from the heat and intensity of microdermabrasion.

Zanthalene and Zanthoxylum Bugeuanum Fruit Extracts help prevent irritation and itching as well as soothe the skin. Clinical testing has also shown that these extracts can also help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Algae extract, rich in polypeptides and amino acids, helps remineralize the skin, restore elasticity, and support collagen production. Artemisia Extract not only contains Vitamin C, calcium, and zinc, but also has anti-inflammatory, anti-itch, and anti-irritation properties.

The cleanser is purported to remove dirt and impurities and prepare the skin for microdermabrasion, as well as soothe irritation. Although I did need to do a pre-cleanse with my regular cleanser and Soniclear first, the PMD cleanser did remove the leftover oils that the initial cleanse missed. Also, when I had on heavy makeup, I did two pre-cleanses, the first with oil, then with regular cleanser, and finally, the PMD cleanser.

While I’m not sure if the Advanced Soothing Cleanser prevented any irritation, I do know that it did not cause any further irritation when I used it after treatment. I liked that it was gentle, and did not strip my skin of moisture.

Neuro Neutralizing Toner

According to PMD, the Neuro Neutralizing Toner helps minimize any discomfort or irritation that may occur after microdermabrasion. The fragrance-free formula not only balances pH, but helps smooth away flaking skin and evens out skin tone.

This toner is formulated with a neurogenic Triple A Complex that acts as anti-inflammatory, anti-sting, and astringent agent to balance and soothe the skin as well as initiate the healing process. Curcurbita Pepo (Ocaline PF) not only blocks free radicals and helps prevent premature aging, but increases the skin’s oxygen consumption by 50%. Allantoin, a moisture-binding humectant, increases the effect of any moisturizer used and stimulates epithelial growth.

I like that the Neuro Neutralizing Toner was non-irritating. I haven’t used it long enough to attest to any anti-aging or healing properties, but I do know it softened my skin by balancing the pH, and my serum did seem to absorb more easily. Also, unlike other toners, it did not irritate or inflame my skin after microdermabrasion treatment.

Professional Recovery Moisturizer

Fragrance-free Professional Recovery Moisturizer is purported to not only smooth and hydrate the skin, but enhance healing and recovery while preventing premature aging. It’s formulated to increase cell renewal and lock in moisture during and after the regeneration period following microdermabrasion treatment.

Coralline Officinalis Extract acts as an anti-inflammatory to reduce redness, soothe the skin, and increase cellular cohesion. Ellagi-C helps increase cell renewal and improves the overall healing and recovery process. Also, the ingredient helps to reverse the signs of aging by increasing Vitamin C absorption. Finally, Matrixyl Synthe 6 peptides help stimulate the skin’s natural collagen and elastin production to help fill wrinkles as well as tighten and firm the skin.

The ingredients of the Professional Recovery Moisturizer are impressive, especially the Matrixyl Synthe 6, which has been scientifically proven. Although the formula is fragrance-free, it has a light, fresh natural scent that’s quite pleasant. The moisturizer is easy to apply and readily absorbed, leaving my skin soft and smooth.

The only negative with the Professional Recovery Moisturizer is the jar packaging. I don’t like the idea of repeatedly dipping into the jar because it’s unsanitary. Also, skincare products need to be packaged in a way that minimizes exposure to light and air, which can degrade the ingredients and render them ineffective (Kaur, Kapila & Agrawal, 2007). To remedy this issue, I simply transferred the cream into an opaque travel pump.

Recovery Collagen Infusion Facial Mask

The last time I used the PMD was yesterday, and I switched to the green disc. As I absolutely LOVE sheet masks, I was really excited about this! So excited, that when I went to put it on my face after using the PMD device, I was pleasantly surprised that it was blue! NOT! I was having issues getting this mask on, which was strange, considering I use sheet masks all the time. [Insert “face palm” here] I didn’t read the instructions, and this is one of those high-quality sheet masks that has two protective layers- the blue was one of them…lol!

Once I got the thin mask onto my face, I noticed how well it clung to my skin. It also had a fresh light scent, but if you’re sensitive, it shouldn’t be too bothersome because it dissipates quickly. The serum contains hyaluronic acid, acetyl tetrapeptide, collagen, and olive oil, so it’s perfect to use right after a microderm treatment. It was very cooling and soothing, and after 30 minutes, I took it off, massaged the excess serum into my skin, and…wow! My skin was super smooth and soft, and there was no stickiness or greasy feeling.

Overall, the PMD system has been a great tool to keep my skin radiant. I’ve used it for four weeks now, along with the Regeneration System, and I’ve used the collagen mask once. As mentioned previously, my skin is smoother, my pores are less noticeable, and now I’ve noticed a very slight improvement in hyperpigmentation. I’m confident that with continued use, my skin will be absolutely radiant and glowing!

If your skin is need of a pick-me-up, you’ll definitely want to consider the PMD. Check it out at PMDBeauty.com.
